Title: Gaining Insight from a Leader – Interview with My Supervisor
Date/Time: July 14, 2025 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Field & Focus
I am currently completing my practicum in the field of data management and backend development at Saayam For All – Volunteer Service, an organization that uses technology to empower volunteers and assist communities. My core responsibilities include assisting with backend systems, optimizing APIs, maintaining user databases, and learning to manage real-world data for nonprofit operations. Key concepts in this field include data integrity, RESTful API integration, cloud systems, and volunteer data tracking. Through this interview with my supervisor, I wanted to better understand not only the technical aspects but also the professional skills and mindset required to thrive in the field. This session was designed to give me guidance on tools to master, career paths, and how to transition successfully from academic learning to workplace application.
Interview Questions & Supervisor's Responses

I prepared a list of 7 thoughtful questions related to data systems and nonprofit technology management. The interview was conducted via Zoom and lasted approximately one hour. My supervisor shared deep insights from their experience and gave practical advice.
-
What key skills are most important for success in this field?
My supervisor emphasized a strong foundation in data structures, SQL, and problem-solving. Just as important are soft skills like collaboration, communication, and the ability to understand the user’s needs behind the system. -
What tools and technologies should I master?
I was advised to gain proficiency in backend programming (especially Java), relational databases, API development, and data visualization tools like Power BI. Cloud platforms like AWS or GCP were also recommended. -
How do you usually start and manage a new technical project?
Projects are initiated with clear goals and a thorough understanding of the problem. Planning includes stakeholder meetings, setting milestones, and choosing the right tech stack. Data drives most decisions, especially when optimizing workflows or solving community-related issues. -
What are the biggest challenges in data system management for nonprofits?
Budget and time constraints are a common issue, along with inconsistent data entry. Solutions involve automation, basic training for staff, and strategic use of open-source tools. -
How do you stay current with technology trends?
The supervisor follows tech blogs, attends webinars, and takes micro-courses. They stressed learning by doing and contributing to community projects as key ways to grow. -
Any advice for students transitioning into professional tech roles?
Stay curious, ask questions, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Also, it’s important to understand the business goals behind every task and always think about the bigger picture. -
How do you measure project success?
Success is measured by how stable and useful the system is, as well as user feedback and volunteer engagement levels. Performance metrics and real-world impact are always considered.
Reflection & Takeaways
This interview helped me understand that success in tech is not just about writing code—it’s about solving real problems. I learned that I should continuously build my technical skills while also improving my communication and project management abilities. My supervisor’s advice to always think from the user’s perspective and align with the organization’s goals really stood out. I also realized the importance of staying flexible and open to learning every day. This interview gave me both clarity and motivation for my future career in information systems.
